IRENDS IN IONISATION ENERGIES DOWN THE GROUP OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

IRENDS IN IONISATION ENERGIES DOWN THE GROUP OF THE PERIODIC TABLE:

For any group ionization energies decreases down the group even with the increasing atomic number. Down the group atomic size increases due to successive addition of new shells. Hence the distance of valence shell from the nucleus increases. This reduces the nuclear hold on the valence electrons. Similarly due to increase in number shells shielding effect also increases which decreases the effective nuclear therefore less energy is required to remove electron from the valance shell and values for first ionization energy decreases down the group.
